Barnsley conceded an 89th-minute penalty in a 2-2 draw at home to Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

Cauley Woodrow put the Reds in front with a spectacular goal but the visitors levelled six minutes later.  Conor Chaplin netted his first goal for the club five minutes after half-time then Bambo Diaby was judged to have fouled a visiting player in the box and the spot-kick was converted.

Daniel Stendel made two changes from the side that lost at Sheffield Wednesday a week ago. The injured Alex Mowatt was replaced by Conor Chaplin, who played behind lone striker Woodrow with Mike Bahre dropping back into central midfield. At left-back, Ben Williams replaced Dimitri Cavare.

The visitors should have taken the lead in the fourth minute when a low cross from the right reached left-back Ben Purrington who was totally unmarked five yards out but screwed his shot back across goal and wide. Jonny Williams had a shot from the edge of the box easily saved by Sami Radlinger then Josh Cullen’s effort was blocked by Bambo Diaby while, at the other end, Cauley Woodrow headed over a Chaplin corner.

The Reds almost took the lead when Cameron McGeehan’s left wing corner was headed towards his own goal by Darren Pratley but goalkeeper Dillon Phillips tipped it over the bar. It was 1-0 minutes later when Woodrow knocked the ball into the air, just outside the box, and unleashed a superb strike into the top left corner for his first goal of the season on 34 minutes. Woodrow almost made it 2-0 when he slid in to meet a low Wilks cross, after good work by Chaplin, but his effort from five yards out was straight at Phillips.

It was the visitors who levelled after 40 minutes as Jonny Williams got the byline on the right of the box and pulled the ball back for teenager Conor Gallagher who took a touch before firing in from close range.

The Reds took the lead five minutes into the second half with a superb team move. After a fine McGeehan pass opened the visiting defence up, Barnsley advanced quickly on the Addicks goal and Luke Thomas played in Chaplin. He looked to have hesitated by taking a touch past a defender but eventually squeezed the ball past the goalkeeper and in from seven yards out.

The same player almost made it 3-1 five minutes later after being put in the clear by Wilks but, after taking a touch to the left of the box, he fired narrowly over the bar from 15 yards out.

Charlton’s Lyle Taylor tested Radlinger with a swerving shot from the edge of the box which struck the goalkeeper’s chest. At the other end, Mads Andersen’s header from McGeehan’s corner was nodded off the line by Cullen.

The visitors had an excellent chance to level on 82 minutes when substitute Chuks Aneke was put clean through on goal on the right of the box but Radlinger made an excellent one-on-one block. But Charlton levelled from the spot after Diaby tripped Gallagher in the box and Taylor walked up to the ball and fired in the penalty.

Barnsley (4-4-1-1): Radlinger; Sibbick, Andersen, Diaby, B Williams; Thomas, McGeehan, Bahre, Wilks (Styles 90); Chaplin (Thiam 78); Woodrow. Subs: Collins, J Williams, Cavare, Halme, Schmidt, Styles, Thiam.  Yellow cards: Woodrow.  Goals: Woodrow 34, Chaplin 50.

AS IT HAPPENED
  •
  • GAME UNDERWAY
  • 15:04pm

1 Cauley Woodrow wins a free-kick which Cameron McGeehan takes from the left wing and it is headed away
  • 15:05pm

2 Now Mallik Wilks wins a free-kick in almost exactly the same position
  • 15:05pm

3 McGeehan's second free-kick goes straight out amid some half-hearted appeals that Woodrow has been fouled in the box
  • 15:07pm

4 A huge, huge chance for Charlton to take the lead. Chris Solly's low cross from the right goes all the way through the box and is met at the back post by Ben Purrington who is totally unmarked five yards out but puts his shot across goal and wide. A terrible miss
  • 15:09pm

6 A first shot on target as Jonny Williams' effort from just outside the box is easily saved by Sami Radlinger who gets down to his left
  • 15:10pm

It's been a strange start to the game because Barnsley have seen much more of the ball and have looked good on it, passing well and getting forward, but it is the visitors who have had two chances - one of which was a really good opportunity
  • 15:12pm

9 Conor Chaplin takes a corner from the right and it is headed over 12 yards out by Cauley Woodrow. It would have taken a superb header to score from there
  • 15:13pm

Barnsley look so much more confident and comfortable on the ball in attacking areas than they did in midweek against Carlisle or a week ago at Hillsborough
  • 15:14pm

12 Charlton have a free-kick on the right. It's taken by Josh Cullen and headed clear by Bambo Diaby
  • 15:16pm

13 Conor Chaplin brilliantly chests down a long ball to Woodrow but the return pass is slightly overhit. A good sign of a relationship between Barnsley's two grin players
  • 15:16pm

14 Another good chance for Charlton. Jonathan Leko goes down the right of the box and pulls the ball back to Josh Cullen but his 15-yard shot is blocked well by Bambo Diaby
  • 15:17pm

The first 14 minutes here have been played at a good pace and, to use a cliche, it's been end to end stuff
  • 15:21pm

The game has just settled down a little bit now as we approached the 20-minute mark. Barnsley will be fairly happy with how they have played but Charlton do look dangerous as well
  • 15:23pm

Bambo Diaby is having a good game so far, wining lots of headers and making a crucial block earlier
  • 15:24pm

Clash of heads. Ben Williams for Barnsley but he is up and looks OK. The Charlton player Chris Solly is still down receiving treatment
  • 15:26pm

Solly is going to be replaced by Deji Oshilaja
  • 15:29pm

    YELLOW CARD
Now Williams is taken out by Deji Oshilaja who gets the first yellow card of the game
  • 15:29pm

27 McGeehan's free-kick from the left is headed clear
  • 15:33pm

Half an hour gone now. It's a pretty even match but Charlton had the best chance by far with that fourth minute miss by Ben Purrington
  • 15:34pm

32 Barnsley so close to the lead. McGeehan's corner is headed by a Charlton player, I think Darren Pratley, at his own goal but keeper Dillon Phillips tips it over
  • 15:35pm

The second corner is then cleared. But Barnsley look to be getting closer to an opener
  • 15:36pm

    GOAL!
Cauley Woodrow smashes a spectacular volley into the top left corner from outside the box.
  • 15:38pm

That is a truly brilliant goal. The ball sat up nicely for him and he just leathered it in for his first goal of the season
  • 15:39pm

37 Nearly two in two minutes for Woodrow. Chaplin plays Wilks in down the left of the box and the low cross is met by the striker sliding in but the shot goes straight at goalkeeper Phillips
  • 15:41pm

Looks like another injury for Charlton,. Their star striker Lyle Taylor is hobbling to the touchline
  • 15:41pm

Taylor is back on but does not look comfortable
  • 15:42pm

    Conor Gallagher equalises
  • 15:45pm

Jonny Williams got down the right wing and pulled a low ball back for the teenage Chelsea loanee to fire in
  • 15:45pm

Disappointing for Barnsley who had looked the better team for most of the match, but they need to react now
  • 15:49pm

Just a few minutes until the break now. Can one of these sides go in ahead?
  • 15:52pm

Deep into first half injury-time. Barnsley have been the better side throughout the half but Charlton have created as many decent chances and took one just before the break to slow down their hosts' momentum
  • 15:53pm

    HALF-TIME: Barnsley 1, Charlton 1.
  • 16:10pm

The players are back on the pitch
  • 16:10pm

    SECOND HALF UNDERWAY
  • 16:12pm

Charlton have started the second half off the attack and have had pretty much all of the ball in the first two minutes, without creating a chance
  • 16:13pm

    GOAL!
Conor Chaplin gets his first Barnsley goal!!
  • 16:14pm

Whereas the opener was an individual stunner, this was an excellent team move
  • 16:16pm

The Reds passed their way very quickly through the visiting defence with Luke Thomas eventually playing in Chaplin who looked to have hesitated too long when he took a touch past a defender, but eventually he squeezed the ball in from seven yards out
  • 16:19pm

That's a big moment for Chaplin who missed some big chances on Tuesday.
  • 16:19pm

And a huge moment for Barnsley who will be now looking to make it two wins from two league games at Oakwell this season
  • 16:21pm

55 Chaplin nearly makes it 3-1. This time it is Wilks who plays him through and he again he takes a touch before this time firing over from 15 yards out on the left of the box
  • 16:23pm

Delay here as the referee seems to have damaged his face or mouth after being accidentally tripped over by Cauley Woodrow
  • 16:26pm

The referee is OK and the game is back underway. The home fans are very noisy. They know their team could be closing in on a huge win but there is a long way to go
  • 16:29pm

Ben Williams slides in to cleanly win a tackle near his box and the home fans cheer loudly. The 20-year-old is having a strong game at left-back
  • 16:33pm

Barnsley are playing some good football now, passing with real confidence and opening up the visiting defence without yet creating that one big chance for a third goal that could finish Athletic off
  • 16:35pm

    YELLOW CARD
Woodrow booked for a foul near the halfway line. The referee played an advantage and Lyle Taylor's swerving shot from the edge of the box hit Radlinger's chest
  • 16:38pm

73 Mads Andersen comes close to his first Barnsley goal but his header from McGeehan's left-wing corner is nodded away near the line by Josh Cullen
  • 16:43pm

Mamadou Thiam replaces Conor Chaplin who gets a standing ovation after scoring on his first Championship start
  • 16:44pm

Chaplin was excellent today, creating several chances before scoring what might prove to be the winner
  • 16:47pm

81 Barnsley fans want a penalty as Wilks' volley from Williams' cross hits Jason Pearce - but the referee waves the claims away
  • 16:48pm

82 Big chance for Charlton as a fine pass put Chuks Aneke through on goal on the right of the box but Sami Radlinger rushes out to denied him one on one
  • 16:49pm

Charlton's last change sees striker Macauley Bonne replace central midfielder Darren Pratley
  • 16:49pm

    Attendance: 13,006 (788 from Charlton)
  • 16:53pm

    Penalty to Charlton
  • 16:53pm

Clear trip by Bambo Diary on Conor Gallagher
  • 16:53pm

Lyle Taylor is going to take it
  • 16:54pm

    GOAL!
    Lyle Taylor
  • 16:55pm

A big blow for the Reds. They have brought on Callum Styles for Mallik Wilks
  • 16:56pm

    Five minutes added time
  • 16:57pm

Disappointing for Diaby who otherwise has had an excellent game
  • 17:00pm

Into the last added minute, Charlton have a free-kick 40 yards from the home goal
  • 17:01pm

    FULL-TIME: Barnsley 2, Charlton 2.
