Cauley Woodrow put the Reds in front with a spectacular goal but the visitors levelled six minutes later. Conor Chaplin netted his first goal for the club five minutes after half-time then Bambo Diaby was judged to have fouled a visiting player in the box and the spot-kick was converted.
Daniel Stendel made two changes from the side that lost at Sheffield Wednesday a week ago. The injured Alex Mowatt was replaced by Conor Chaplin, who played behind lone striker Woodrow with Mike Bahre dropping back into central midfield. At left-back, Ben Williams replaced Dimitri Cavare.
The visitors should have taken the lead in the fourth minute when a low cross from the right reached left-back Ben Purrington who was totally unmarked five yards out but screwed his shot back across goal and wide. Jonny Williams had a shot from the edge of the box easily saved by Sami Radlinger then Josh Cullen’s effort was blocked by Bambo Diaby while, at the other end, Cauley Woodrow headed over a Chaplin corner.
The Reds almost took the lead when Cameron McGeehan’s left wing corner was headed towards his own goal by Darren Pratley but goalkeeper Dillon Phillips tipped it over the bar. It was 1-0 minutes later when Woodrow knocked the ball into the air, just outside the box, and unleashed a superb strike into the top left corner for his first goal of the season on 34 minutes. Woodrow almost made it 2-0 when he slid in to meet a low Wilks cross, after good work by Chaplin, but his effort from five yards out was straight at Phillips.
It was the visitors who levelled after 40 minutes as Jonny Williams got the byline on the right of the box and pulled the ball back for teenager Conor Gallagher who took a touch before firing in from close range.
The Reds took the lead five minutes into the second half with a superb team move. After a fine McGeehan pass opened the visiting defence up, Barnsley advanced quickly on the Addicks goal and Luke Thomas played in Chaplin. He looked to have hesitated by taking a touch past a defender but eventually squeezed the ball past the goalkeeper and in from seven yards out.
The same player almost made it 3-1 five minutes later after being put in the clear by Wilks but, after taking a touch to the left of the box, he fired narrowly over the bar from 15 yards out.
Charlton’s Lyle Taylor tested Radlinger with a swerving shot from the edge of the box which struck the goalkeeper’s chest. At the other end, Mads Andersen’s header from McGeehan’s corner was nodded off the line by Cullen.
The visitors had an excellent chance to level on 82 minutes when substitute Chuks Aneke was put clean through on goal on the right of the box but Radlinger made an excellent one-on-one block. But Charlton levelled from the spot after Diaby tripped Gallagher in the box and Taylor walked up to the ball and fired in the penalty.
