Coach Chris Stern is pleased for the three Barnsley players who have received international call-ups.

Patrick Schmidt, Ben Williams and Aapo Halme have been selected for the under 21 squads of Austria, Wales and Finland respectively. Stern said: “It’s a good boost for the players, especially Aapo and Patrick who came new this summer. It’s good to show not only Barnsley but their home country that it was the right move. It’s a good chance to show themselves on a bigger stage.”

Striker Schmidt has been called up by Austria under 21s. They are due to play an away game against Andorra on Thursday then visit Albania the following Monday. Williams has been selected for the Wales under 21s squad.

The 20-year-old, who was in the senior squad during the summer but did not make his full debut, could feature in the European Under 21 Championship qualifiers in Wrexham against Belgium on Friday and Germany the following Tuesday.

Centre-back Halme is due to travel with Finland under 21s to Ukraine for a game on Friday before they host Northern Ireland on Tuesday, September 10.
