Cauley Woodrow netted a 94th-minute equaliser as Barnsley fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 draw with Bristol City on Friday evening.  The result meant the Reds moved off the bottom of the table and to within three points of safety, with the rest of the sides set to play over the weekend or on Monday. They are winless in 14 matches, their worst run since 1959, but they showed great determination to fight back for a point.

Barnsley were the better side in the first half but the visitors netted from their first real chance just before the break. The Robins doubled their lead midway through the second half before Aapo Halme pulled one back then former Bristol City striker Woodrow scrambled home at the death.

Caretaker Adam Murray made two changes from the side that lost at Huddersfield six days earlier, with Halme replacing Mads Andersen at centre-back while Mallik Wilks came in for Cameron McGeehan and playing up front as Conor Chaplin dropped back into central midfield.  Bristol’s Callum O’Dowda had the first shot of the game in the 15th minute but his low 20-yard effort was easily held by goalkeeper Brad Collins. That was the only action of a dull first quarter of the game, after which Barnsley began to create regular chances.

The hosts came close in the 26th minute when they broke from a City corner and, after a good header by Chaplin, Alex Mowatt nudged the ball on to Mallik Wilks whose shot from just inside the box on the right was touched impressively wide by goalkeeper Daniel Bentley. Wilks then had another chance when he headed wide 12 yards out from a Dimitri Cavare cross.

Bristol lost their captain and former Barnsley player Josh Brownhill to injury after half an hour. Mowatt almost found the net but his rasping low 25-yard strike went narrowly wide of the bottom right corner after Wilks laid the ball off to him.

Goalkeeper Bentley then made another superb save to touch a ten-yard Chaplin shot onto his right post after Jacob Brown crossed low from the left wing.

The visitors took the lead in the 43rd minute after the referee Jared Gillet judged that Bambo Diaby had pulled the shorts of former Barnsley forward Marley Watkins, booking the home man and giving a free-kick on the left wing. Substitute Niclas Eliasson took the set piece which was headed in at the back post by veteran centre-back Ashley Williams who was totally unmarked.

The second half began, like the first, with neither side creating any meaningful opportunities for the first 25 minutes as both teams battled in a scrappy contest played out in constant rain.

City almost doubled their lead when Andi Weimann beat the offside trap on the right wing and went clean through at a tight angle then his shot hit Halme then Toby Sibbick and went behind for a corner. From the following right-wing corner, Eliasson claimed his second assist of the night as his set-piece was headed home by Andi Weimann who had escaped Kenny Dougall’s attention.

Barnsley pulled one back on 76 minutes when Halme sent in a bullet header from a Mowatt corner for his second goal of the season.  Cauley Woodrow almost levelled in the first of four added minutes when Cavare was released down the right side of the box and fired in a low cross which Barnsley’s top-scorer met but was off balance as he shot tamely at the goalkeeper five yards out. Diaby then headed over a Mowatt cross at the back post.

The equaliser eventually came in the fourth minute of added time when Sibbick and substitute Elliott Simoes swapped passes on the left of the box and a low cross was turned in from close range by Woodrow.

Barnsley: Collins; Diaby, Halme, Sibbick; Cavare, Mowatt, Dougall, Chaplin (Schmidt 72mins), Brown (Simoes 80); Woodrow, Wilks (Thomas 58).  Subs: Radlinger, Andersen, McGeehan, Oduor.   Yellow cards: Diaby, Thomas.  Goals: Halme 76, Woodrow 90+4.  Bristol City: Bentley; Kalas, Moore, Williams; Pereira, O’Dowda, Brownhill (Eliasson 30mins), Massengo, Rowe; Weimann, Watkins (Semenyo 72) Subs: Maenpaa, Wright, Baker, Rodri, Palmer.  Goals: Williams 43, Weimann 70.

10 Bristol City look to be playing on the counter as Barnsley push forwards. Jacob Brown has a powerful effort blocked and it comes out for Dimitri Cavare, whose low cross is well blocked by Taylor Moore and out for a throw. Cavare's long throw is headed towards goal by Bambo Diaby, but it's comfortable for Daniel Bentley.

14 A decent effort by Callum O'Dowda after the visitors break down the right, but his low strike from just outside the box is held by Brad Collins. Bristol City have had the better chances so far.
  • 20:07pm

18 Barnsley lift the somewhat muted Oakwell crowd as Cauley Woodrow wins a header in his own half and Conor Chaplin is there with a cute flick back to the striker. Woodrow then plays Chaplin down the left, and he sprints into space. However, his low cross doesn't give the move the end it deserves and it's cleared.
  • 20:08pm

20 A break in play as Josh Brownhill is helped off the pitch after suffering a knock, and the visitors restart the game from the edge of their own box.

21 Some pressure from Bristol City leads to a corner as Aapo Halme gets in the way of Andreas Weimann's effort. The Finn clears for another corner, and is then the first to the ball into the box. Impressive stuff from the centre-back.
  • 20:13pm

25 Fingertip save from Daniel Bentley to deny Mallik Wilks as the Reds break from a corner. Alex Mowatt powered forward and played in the striker in the right channel, who cut inside and placed a well-hit effort towards the far post. That's the best chance of the half for either side.
  • 20:16pm

28 Another great chance for Barnsley and for Mallik Wilks, who turns a header towards goal from a Dimitri Cavare cross but is narrowly wide. The move was started by Wilks, who combined well with Conor Chaplin on the right before charging into the box.

32 Daniel Bentley again comes to the rescue with a fabulous save to deny Conor Chaplin, who had capitalised on the defender's slip to get on the end of Jacob Brown's cut-back. The 'keeper turned Chaplin's effort onto the post with a strong right hand.
  • 20:22pm

34 Aapo Halme pings a superb right-footed ball out to Jacob Brown, who cuts inside and has his effort blocked for a throw.
  • 20:25pm

37 Both sides still pushing but the Reds have definitely had the better of the last ten or so minutes. With both sides set up in much the same way, they're finding it easy to go man-to-man and most players are winning those individual battles.
  • 20:28pm

40 Bristol City get a throw in a decent position after Aapo Halme cuts out a through ball to Marley Watkins with a slide across the wet turf. The visitors do nothing with it and the Reds advance up the pitch, winning a free kick on the halfway line.
  • 20:29pm

    YELLOW CARD

    GOAL!
43 Ashley Williams heads in from the free kick.
  • 20:35pm

45+1 The home fans feel aggrieved and they're letting their thoughts be known, but there's some suggestion Bambo Diaby had hold of the shorts of Marley Watkins as he went past the centre-back. The header from Ashley Williams was a good one, in fairness, as he rose highest to meet Niclas Eliasson's delivery into the box from the left.

67 Ashley Williams is sent sprawling into the advertising boards as he and Cauley Woodrow chase a ball from Alex Mowatt, but the centre-back got the last touch and it's a corner. The ball is then sent for another corner as Mowatt's delivery is headed out, and Daniel Bentley can punch clear.
