Mike Bahre is working ‘ridiculously hard’ in training to get back in the Barnsley matchday squad.

The 24-year-old midfielder was signed by his fellow German Daniel Stendel on a three-year contact after being on loan last season. He was made captain at the start of this season and played in nine of the first 11 league games before Stendel was sacked last month.

Bahre was an unused substitute in caretaker Adam Murray’s first three games then dropped off the bench for Friday’s draw with Bristol City. Murray told the Chronicle: “We have a number of players in his position and we need goals and assists from them. But Mikey is a really good player and he’s working ridiculously hard in training. His attitude is fantastic and he’s still in our plans.”

Other players who have been left out by Murray include left-back Dani Pinillos and winger Mamadou Thiam.  Right-back Jordan Williams is recovering from a calf injury.
