Patrick Schmidt netted a 94th-minute winner as Barnsley secured their first away win of the season with a 2-1 success at Millwall on Saturday.

Conor Chaplin scored the opener totally against the run of play late in the first half then but the hosts levelled in the 85th minute with their first shot on target.

Schmidt then headed in to make it back-to-back wins for the Reds who have moved up from last place to third-bottom of the Championship, just a point off safety.

Aapo Halme returned in place of Kenny Dougall at the base of the midfield diamond in the only change from the win over QPR a week earlier. There were only six substitutes on the Barnsley bench because one of the players was ill and they only brought an 18-man squad to London.

The hosts dominated the first 40 minutes in terms of possession, territory and chances. They thought they should have had a penalty when Jayson Molumby went down in the box then ex-Red Tom Bradshaw headed wide a cross from the left wing after Bambo Diaby clumsily lost the ball on the halfway line.

Jake Cooper headed wide from close range after Sami Radlinger missed a left-wing free-kick by Jed Wallace but the Millwall centre-back had very little time to react. The same player had another headed chance two minutes later, following a free-kick from the right, but missed the target at a tight angle on the left of the box.

The Reds took the lead with virtually their first attack in the 39th minute. Jacob Brown brilliantly beat a defender on the left of the box and pulled the ball back for Chaplin whose excellent finish from ten yards out saw the ball loop into the top right corner.

Chaplin then fired over from the edge of the box after more good work by Brown and the same player came close again in first half injury-time as, after a good counter-attack, his powerful 15-yard shot was beaten away by former Barnsley goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Barnsley began the second half brightly and Brown forced Bialkowski into another save low to his left with a 12-yard volley on the right of the box from a cross from left-back Clarke Oduor. Mowatt then let fly from 25 yards and the Polish stopper jumped to his right to push the effort away.

The hosts started to get back on top, with Cooper again putting a chance wide at the back post after Radlinger missed a right-wing corner then Bradshaw surprisingly scooped the ball over the bar from close range with the goal gaping after meeting Wallace’s low cross.

Radlinger and Mads Andersen tried to pass the ball out of their area on 70 minutes and the defender lost the ball, leaving his goalkeeper out of position but Halme blocked substitute Matt Smith’s weak effort. Another substitute Aiden O'Brien tried an acrobatic flick from a left-wing cross but the ball floated just over the bar.

O’Brien levelled from close range after Smith headed a left-wing cross back across goal. Cooper once again headed wide in injury-time from a Wallace free-kick.

But, in the 94th minute, Luke Thomas robbed Wallace of the the ball and crossed from the right for his fellow substitute Schmidt to head home.

Tom Bradshaw's name is being sung by the away fans and not in a family friendly way. The home fans retort with a colourful explanation of why the striker left Oakwell
  • 15:09pm

Millwall are having plenty of joy on the right wing with Oduor overloaded by two players at regular intervals. A cross wins another corner on the left

19 Wallace takes a free-kick from the left, Radlinger misses it but Jake `Cooper heads wide at the back post with very little time to think about it
  • 15:22pm

Barnsley's weakness this season has been defending set pieces but, so far in this game, they have withstood a series of corners and free-kicks. Millwall might say that is because their delivery and finishing has not been good enough yet
  • 15:23pm

21 Another free-kick, from the right this time, is headed wide at the back post by Cooper. This was another difficult chance
  • 15:23pm

    YELLOW CARD
Mads Andersen is the first man in the book today. The home fans cheer sarcastically as Barnsley have committed regular fouls throughout the match
  • 15:26pm

25 minutes in and there has not been a shot on target. Millwall have had three off target and have spent most of the game camped in Barnsley's half. The Reds have barely mustered an attack so far but they look pretty solid defensively
  • 15:27pm

This is a very different performance to last week against QPR when the Reds went all out on the attack. This time they are sitting back and soaking up pressure, possible because the Lions are pushing them back
  • 15:31pm

  • 15:33pm

Millwall have a lot of clever players who are good on the ball and being given plenty of opportunities to show that, with Jed Wallace dictating the game at the moment
  • 15:36pm

Ten minutes to go until half-time and it's been a case of hanging on so far for the Reds. But they will be pleased with this scoreline at the break
  • 15:40pm

    GOAL!
    Conor Chaplin!
  • 15:40pm

His seventh goal in as many games
  • 15:41pm

Almost exactly the same goal as the opener last week as Jacob Brown brilliantly beats a man on the left and pulls the ball back for Chaplin who produces a classy finish into the top right corner
  • 15:42pm

That's the fifth straight game in which Barnsley have scored first
  • 15:43pm

Chaplin has now spent the last minute or so sitting on the floor with an injury but he's up now and back in action
  • 15:45pm

44 Another chance for the Reds. After more good work by Brown, Chaplin gets the ball on the edge of the box but fires well over

45+1 Another chance for Chaplin. A good move ends with him having the ball just inside the box and he unleashes a powerful shot which Bartosz Bialkowski beats away
  • 15:48pm

HALF-TIME: Millwall 0, Barnsley 1. The Reds defended constantly for the best part of 40 minutes then took the lead through Conor Chaplin who could have had two more before the break
  • 16:05pm

    SECOND HALF UNDERWAY
  • 16:08pm

  • 16:19pm

Double change for Millwall. Aiden O’Brien for Skalak and Matt Smith for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson
  • 16:19pm

This should be a real test from set pieces now for Barnsley. Smith is huge and they badly struggled with the similarly towering Aden Flint at Cardiff in their previous away match
  • 16:22pm

64 Jacob Brown wins a corner then, after it is cleared, he fires high and wide from 25 yards
  • 16:25pm

The game had calmed down a bit after first the Reds then the Lions had spells on top in this second half. The home fans are getting quite frustrated in a game they just have expected to win
  • 16:26pm

68 A brilliant back heel by Chaplin puts Brown through on goal but he fires wide when the flag is up anyway
