POLICE have launched an appeal after a man was arrested on suspicion of murder in Middlecliffe.

A 40-year-old man was taken into police custody after a 31-year-old woman was stabbed in an incident yesterday. 

Emergency services were called to Windsor Crescent, Middlecliffe, just before 5pm.

The woman was pronounced dead when officers arrived at the scene.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: "There will continue to be an increased police presence in the area today as officers continue to carry out enquiries.

"Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111."
