A COUPLE who met at a youth club as teenagers have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Gary and Mavis Cooper married at St Mary’s Church, Barnsley, in 1960, having met at the former Zion Church in Wombwell.

The couple were featured in the Chronicle ten years ago, on their golden wedding anniversary, and in the years since settled into their roles as babysitters for daughter Beverley Raynor’s three children - now all fully grown.

“We taught them their ABCs,” said Mavis, 83, who grew up on Hoyland Street. “We’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

As youngsters, the couple enjoyed dancing at Wombwell Baths, and after their wedding spent a few days honeymooning in London.

They have lived at Cemetery Road for 58 years, and now enjoy going on holidays together and spending time with their family.

Gary, 82, and Mavis celebrated the milestone with family last week.
