A BARNSLEY man has died 'less than 24 hours' after contracting coronavirus.

Kevin Chadwick, of Thurnscoe, is the first person to have died from the virus in Barnsley who has been named publicly.

As tributes to the popular 47-year-old - originally from Athersley North - flooded social media, his wife Vicky urged people to 'take this virus seriously'.

"I really don’t know how to write this," she posted on Facebook yesterday (Friday).

"Tonight my king passed away. He was taken ill yesterday, and never recovered.

"He was the love of my life and I will miss him forever. Sleep tight, my angel."

There have been 158 confirmed coronavirus cases in Barnsley, with five deaths reported.

A JustGiving page was set up with a target of £300 to allow Vicky to be tested for the virus.

It has since raised more than £1,700.
