POLICE were called after it was reported that a man wielding a machete was damaging cars in the Athersley North area.

At around 8pm on Wednesday, police were called to the Lindhurst area of Athersley North following reports that a man was causing damage to vehicles.

Armed officers were also deployed when it was reported that the man was wielding a machete.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “Upon arrival, there were signs that damage had been caused to a vehicle and a nearby shop.

“Extensive searches were carried out into the evening, which included use of the force’s helicopter.

“The suspect has not yet been located and enquiries are ongoing.”
