A HERITAGE group has been chosen to receive a cash sum after it came out on top in a supermarket scheme.

Barnsley Main Heritage Group will receive £750 after winning the Jack’s Supermarket support scheme.

The supermarket, which is part of the Tesco family, launched the initiative to donate proceeds from the sale of carrier bags to local good causes, voted for by its customers.

For the past three months shoppers at Jack’s Barnsley have been voting for four worthy causes including, with Barnsley Main Heritage Group winning the donation after securing 30 per cent of the votes.

Sarah Dewey, social media, events and publicity co-ordinator at Barnsley Main Heritage Group, said: “The donation enables us to continue to improve the natural habitat and appearance of the site by purchasing more wildflower seeds, plants, shrubs and fruit trees, as well as a strimmer to help with ongoing maintenance.

“The group are thrilled with the further endorsement of local residents and thank Jack’s for the opportunity to take part in this initiative.”

The group’s volunteers aim to develop the former colliery site, on Oaks Lane, into a heritage site for local residents and visitors to learn about the mining industry.
