A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with a stabbing incident in Athersley on Friday night.

Stephen Riley, 43, was found injured on Darley Avenue, Athersley, at around 11pm on Friday night before he was taken to hospital - though he died shortly after midnight. 

A post-mortem examination concluded that he had died from a stab wound to the chest.

Detectives have today arrested a 37-year-old man from Barnsley on suspicion of murder in connection with Mr Riley's death - he is currently in custody.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Mr Riley's family continue to be supported by specially trained officers and we remain keen to hear from anyone with information which could assist our investigation.

"If you were in the Athersley area on Friday night and saw anything suspicious, please call 101.

"The incident number to quote is 1227 of June 26."
