‘Proper professional’ Adam Davies is set to play his 200th Barnsley game at home to Accrington Stanley tomorrow.

The 26-year-old arrived at Oakwell in 2014 from Sheffield Wednesday and has been number one since the following campaign.

He has kept 63 clean sheets – including in each of his last three games – and is seventh in the list of appearance-making goalkeepers behind Harry Hough (364), Clive Baker (337), Tommy Gale (309), Luke Steele (227), Peter Springett (211) and David Watson (206).

Of the players who have made their debuts for the Reds in this century, only Bobby Hassell (299), Stephen Foster (244) and Steele (227) have played more games than Davies.

His current contract is set to expire at the end of the current season and there have been no negotiations yet over an extension.

Coach Dale Tonge said: “Davo has been outstanding for us. We look to him as staff as a leader within the squad.  He is the elder statesman at 26, which is very young. He’s a proper professional and gets on with his work every day. He’s not always the loudest but the way he acts is a credit to the football club.”

The Reds followed goalless draws with Burton Albion and Portsmouth with a 3-0 win at Southend United. They have the best defensive record in League One, having let in just 28 goals in their 35 games.  They have conceded just two goals in their last six games.

Head coach Daniel Stendel said: “We have a very good defence and one of the best goalkeepers in this league in Davo. Our defending starts from the front with Cauley Woodrow.  “We win together and we keep clean sheets together.”

Davies and Stendel have been nominated for League One’s Player and Manager of the Month for February respectively.
