Valerien Ismael is delighted that centre-back Michal Helik has been named in the Poland squad for next month’s European Championships.

The Reds’ Player of the Year collected his first two caps in March after excelling in his first season in England.

Poland are due to play friendlies on June 1 – two days after the Championship play-off – and 8 before facing Slovakia in their first Euros game in St Petersburg on June 15.

Head coach Valerien Ismael told the Chronicle: “I am proud of him.

“He reached that massive goal through his work at Barnsley.

“When I came, it was difficult to think that Michal Helik would be in the squad for Euro 2021 six months later. It is a great feeling for everyone in the club.

“He is happy but he wants to first make the next step with Barnsley.”
