JOEY Barton is due to stand trial from Monday for allegedly assaulting former Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel more than two years ago.

The court case refers to an incident after the Reds’ 4-2 win over Barton’s Fleetwood Town on April 13, 2019.

Barton, now Bristol Rovers manager, denies a charge of assault.

The trial is due to take place at Sheffield Crown Court.

It was initially set to take place in June last year but was put back by 12 months due to a backlog caused by the coronavirus and to avoid the football season.

Barton left Fleetwood in January then joined Bristol Rovers in February but could not stop them being relegated to League Two.

Stendel left Barnsley in October 2019 then had a spell in Scotland with Hearts.

He is now in charge of French club Nancy.
