A MULTI-MILLION pound town centre footbridge has been delayed.
Market Gate Bridge, which is being funded by both Barnsley Council and Network Rail at a cost of £5.6m, will take people from the new car park over the railway line to the pedestrian area in front of the transport interchange’s main entrance.
A report, set to be discussed by ruling cabinet members on Wednesday, revealed its construction has been delayed due to an extended procurement process.
It said: “A preferred contractor has now been identified with final contract negotiations taking place, including confirmation of an expected construction timetable.
“However, it is expected that works will commence on site from November.”
We have been at the heart of our community, every week, since 1858. The town and its people have changed dramatically since then but the Chronicle has been a constant.
It’s our belief that news should be available to everyone regardless of their circumstance. But we need a little helping hand to do so.
Production Editor, Ashley Ball, said: "In an ever changing media world, it’s important that news is reported correctly and without any hidden agenda.
Your support allows us to keep holding decision-makers to account and report on everything that happens in the town, good or bad, fairly."
