Poya Asbaghi is now highly to be named Barnsley head coach in the coming days, the Chronicle understands.

The 36-year-old Swede had an interview in 2019 but the Reds appointed Gerhard Struber.

He was then manager of IFK Gothenburg who he won the Swedish Cup with but they sacked him the following September.

He became coach of Sweden under 21s a year ago and had them unbeaten at the top of their European Championship qualifying group going into tonight’s game in Dublin against the Republic of Ireland.

The Chronicle understands the move is almost finalised but it is unknown as yet whether he will arrive in time to lead the team at Fulham on Saturday.
