Left-back Ben Williams has joined League One Cheltenham Town for an undisclosed fee in Barnsley's first piece of business during the January transfer window which opened on Saturday.

The 22-year-old joined in 2017 after leaving Blackburn's academy and played 15 matches in the 2018/19 promotion season from League One and a further 21 as Barnsley narrowly stayed in the Championship the next campaign.

Williams then missed all of last season with a knee injury before playing five games this season but none since October 2.

He was out of contract at the end of this season.Cheltenham are currently 15th in the third tier.

Williams told the club website: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Barnsley and want to thank everyone who supported me and believed in me over the last four and a half years.

“There are plenty of happy memories that I can look back on, particularly winning promotion and our great escape against all the odds.

“I’m looking forward to starting an exciting new chapter in my career and would like to wish the club the very best moving forward.”
