CLAIMS circulating online that temporary houses for immigrants were being built on a site in Barnsley have been exposed as false.
Various Facebook pages were being spammed with claims that a site on Tank Row, Cundy Cross was being prepped to house immigrants.
The stories resulted in a small number of people attending the site in protest and the Chronicle understands contractors working on the project were being heckled.
But it was confirmed the structures are just temporary buildings that are in storage.
They were previously used by supermarkets but are not currently in use.
A spokesperson from Barnsley Council said: “We’ve noticed some posts and questions circulating about work taking place on a former glass works site at Stairfoot.
“The information being shared on social media is incorrect.
“No recent planning applications have been approved at this site, so our planning enforcement team visited to investigate.
“Our officers are, at this stage, satisfied that the site is being used for storage and no enforcement action is required.
“It’s crucial that everyone takes the time to verify information before sharing it on social media.”
