Barnsley conceded an 92nd-minute leveller in a 1-1 draw at home to Stockport County on Saturday evening.

Adam Phillips netted an early penalty as the Reds made a good start but Stockport got back into the game and were the better side for spells, before the injury-time equaliser.

Barnsley, who thought they could have had another penalty right at the end, are now sixth with 14 points from their first eight games.

Darrell Clarke made one change from the team who won at Burton Albion a week before. Home debutant Stephen Humphrys was rewarded for his winner last week with his first start for the club, in place of Sam Cosgrove, while Donovan Pines and Fabio Jalo were both on the bench after injuries but there was still no Max Watters.

Barnsley started brightly and took a fourth-minute lead from the penalty spot. After good work down the left wing by Josh Earl, Corey O’Keeffe played a clever square pass into the box to Davis Keillor-Dunn who looked to be tripped by Tyler Onyagno. Phillips converted the penalty for his fifth goal of the season.

Seconds later, Humphrys could have made it 2-0 after Stockport made a mess of a long Earl pass but he was denied one-on-one by former Barnsley under 21s goalkeeper Corey Addai.

The game calmed down after that with Stockport slowly getting back into it and having their first chance on 31 minutes when, after Mael de Gevigney lost the ball, a cross from the left hit Isaac Olaofe then the ball floated to Gaga Slonina to catch easily.

The visitors nearly levelled in first half injury-time when Earl lost the ball and Louie Barry was played clean through but Slonina came out to the edge of the box to block with his legs then did the same from Kyle Wootton’s follow-up. At the other end, Connell saw a volley from the edge of the box blocked by Ibou Touray.

In the second half, Lewis Bate robbed Matty Craig of the ball then curled wide of the top right corner from 20 yards. At the other end, Addai saved a powerful low long-range Humphrys effort after good working by Craig to win the ball.

Former Barnsley loanee Callum Connolly curled wide from the edge of the box after a good move by the visitors.

Clarke made a triple change just before the hour-mark with Keillor-Dunn, Humphrys and Craig replaced by Cosgrove, Aiden Marsh and Josh Benson.

Barnsley could have made it 2-0 on 70 minutes when O’Keeffe’s pass put Barry Cotter in behind the visiting defence but he blazed over from the right of the box, when he could have squared to Marsh.

After Earl lost the ball, Stockport wanted a penalty for an alleged foul by Marsh on Lewis Fiorini but it was not given.

Earl then burst into the box and saw one shot blocked before the next, from 15 yards, was saved by Addai diving down to his left.

The equaliser saw Benson fail to clear after a free-kick then Stockport worked the ball down the right and pulled it back for Louie Barry whose first effort was blocked by his own player then the second effort hit O’Keeffe and dribbled into the bottom right corner past the wrong-footed Slonina.

Barnsley felt they should have had another penalty after that when, after Marsh brought the ball down in the box, Cosgrove crossed low towards Kyran Lofthouse who looked to be taken out by Ibou Touray.
