A SHORT film centred around a Christmas carol which was unearthed from the Barnsley Chronicle’s archives last year will premiere next month.

The carol was written back in 1933 by local musician Arthur Godfrey and published in the Chronicle the same month the town hall opened.

Delving deeper into its history, a new film explores other writings from Arthur with contributions from local school groups and renowned poet Ian McMillan.

It will premiere on Tuesday, December 10 at a free senior citizens’ screening event held at Parkway Cinema.

It will be released on the Barnsley Museums’ YouTube channel at 7pm on the same day.

Coun Robin Franklin, cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture, said: “This campaign is a wonderful opportunity to bring our community together and celebrate a part of Barnsley’s heritage.

“The involvement of local school groups and contributions from the carol writer’s family add a unique and personal touch to this historic project.

“I’d encourage everyone to watch and get in the festive spirit, with a Barnsley Christmas song.”
