Barnsley went out of the FA Cup on penalties after dominating but failing to score in a 0-0 draw with Bristol Rovers at home in the second round on Saturday.
The Reds bossed the majority of the game but missed a series of good chances throughout the 90 minutes and extra-time. They had 30 shots to their visitors’ six and nine of the ten efforts on targets.
But Rovers scored all their penalties while Adam Phillips and Josh Earl missed.
Darrell Clarke picked a strong side, only making one change from the last league game as Kelechi Nwakali came in for the benched Jon Russell. Nwakali played in holding midfield with Luca Connell moving to the left of the central three.
The visitors came close in the sixth minute when Gatlin O’Donkor was played through on the left and smashed a powerful shot from a tight angle off the inside of the near post.
Shaq Forde then cut in from the right wing and hit a swerving 25-yard shot which Ben Killip pushed away.
But Barnsley then had a long spell of being on top. Georgie Gent’s 35-yard shot whistled wide of the bottom right corner before Stephen Humphrys and Nwakali saw efforts from just outside the box saved by Josh Griffiths, the latter the most dangerous which required a good diving stop.
Marc Roberts headed wide from a Luca Connell corner then Davis Keillor-Dunn scuffed a shot off target from just inside the area.
After a fantastic run past several tackles by Humphrys, Nwakali swapped passes with Phillips but curled wide of the bottom right corner from 20 yards. Gent then fired into the side netting in space on the left of the box after a good move.
Humphrys saw a curling 25-yard effort bounce off the left post before O’Keeffe appealed for a penalty after an apparent push by O’Donkor in the box.
The second half was just 25 seconds old when Phillips headed onto the crossbar from a left-sided Connell cross.
Humphrys had the best chance of the game when, after Jamie Lindsay lost the ball, Phillips played him clean through but his weak effort was saved by Griffiths. A low Phillips cross then just went past the toe of Humphrys.
Substitute Fabio Jalo scuffed a good chance wide inside the box after being picked out by Gent who was found by a fine Killip pass. Jalo had a better effort on 85 minutes when, after being picked out by fellow substitute Kyran Lofthouse, his 15-yard shot on the turn was impressively saved by Griffiths.
Humphrys then saw a close-range shot following a Connell corner blocked almost on the line by a defender. Jalo beat a man and crossed from the right which went through Lofthouse and Jalo also headed over from a Connell free-kick in injury-time.
Sam Cosgrove came on for extra-time and could have netted when Lofthouse found him in the box but his tame effort was easily saved.
Josh Earl then saw a 25-yard shot tipped out of the bottom right corner by Griffiths following a fine Connell pass.
In the second half of extra-time, Cosgrove headed over after an excellent run and cross by substitute Barry Cotter. Seconds later, the ball dropped to Cosgrove in the box with the goal gaping but he took a heavy touch. Cosgrove met a Russell cross in the 121st minute but headed too close to Griffiths.
Rovers had not threatened since the opening ten minutes, other than a few difficult efforts well off target.
Phillips hit the post with the first penalty in the shoot-out then Earl saw the last saved. Rovers scored all four of theirs while Cosgrove, Russell and Jalo netted for the Reds.
