Gaga Slonina is expected to be recalled by Chelsea from Barnsley after the January transfer window opens on Wednesday.
The American international goalkeeper has played 14 games on loan to the Reds this season but none since October as he was first dropped due to a series of errors then picked up a finger injury which he is still out with.
The Reds – who were thought to be happy to keep him all season if fit – are planning to replace him in the window with a new goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be assessing the future of Matty Craig whose loan could also be cut short in January.
The 21-year-old midfielder has made 14 appearances for the Reds but his only start in the last three months was last week at home to Leyton Orient when he was taken off on 37 minutes and he has not been in the matchday squad since.
