New Barnsley captain Stephen Dawson has been harshly judged by some fans, says manager Danny Wilson.

The Irish midfielder was made skipper for the 3-0 loss at Watford on Saturday in which he cost the Reds their first two goals. Wilson said: "I think Daws is judged harshly at times because I think he gives the team a great deal. He is a leader by example in his commitment to the cause.

"The criticism of Steve is that he gives the ball away but he doesn't half get it back quickly. He's got a terrific temperament.  Is he the most technically gifted player? Possibly not. But he gives you an honesty and reliability.

"He's going to battle for everything and that's why he was made captain.  We would like to make him better on the ball but he keeps things simple and gives it to the people who can play. I know how he feels because that's all I did as a player. I understood my strengths and so does he."
