BARNSLEY has been chosen as the home for a new ITV period drama being billed as 'the new Downton Abbey'.

Rural Wortley will be transformed into a film set for 'Jericho', a historical tale set in 1875 about the building of the Settle to Carlisle railway in the Yorkshire Dales.

The new period drama – centred on the building of a railway viaduct on the line – has been commissioned by ITV but bosses are remaining tight-lipped about the stars of the show and how many episodes will be shot.

Work on constructing the set is starting later this month, which will be done off site and arrive in flat packs. Filming is expected to begin at the end of May.
