Shaw Lane Aquaforce will not contest the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup despite making it to the final.

The Ducks were due to play Frickley in Tuesday night's final at Bramall Lane but have withdrawn from the competition so that they can focus on their play-off first leg game 24 hours later against Lincoln United.

Aquaforce owner Craig Wood explained the decision. He said: “For us to play in the Senior Cup final on Tuesday would put the club at a massive disadvantage going into play-offs semi-final 24 hours later for two reasons.

“The size of our squad means that at least half of the team would have to play two games in 48 hours. The other is player welfare because it is unreasonable to expect players to play two games in 48 hours.

“It would never happen at a professional level so why should it happen at our level when these lads have honest jobs and are not athletes?”

Aquaforce host Lincoln United on Wednesday at Shaw Lane. The game will kick off at 7.45pm.
