A CONVICTED murderer who turned his life around through art has dedicated his latest piece to a dear friend who died last year.

Darren Green, 46, was jailed in 1997 after a fight with a friend got out of hand. He spent 14 years in prison during which time he discovered art, after picking up a book by chance in the prison library.

While he remains on parole for the rest of his life, Darren has taken to helping others with his work donating proceeds from his work to the National Union of Mineworkers and NSPCC. Darren’s latest painting, titled ‘The Tree of Life’, is dedicated to Liz Parkhurst, who died in August last year. Liz devoted the best part of 20 years to volunteering in Penistone’s Springvale Community Garden, and so Darren says he will donate all proceeds from the sale of the painting to the garden as a tribute.

Darren, who lives in Dodworth, said: “I have never met anybody of the older generation who acted more like they were still 18 than Liz. I was thinking about her and realised that although we get older and learn more, it’s important to stay young at heart.”
