A TRUE blast from the past was experienced at Tesco last weekend.

After an appeal in the Chronicle, Tesco Stairfoot community champion Lisa Hammond was able to reunite the Wombwell High students who originally helped bury a time capsule in the store when it opened in July 1988.

The reunion was just part of the superstore’s 30th anniversary celebrations.

Lisa said: “The time capsule has always been something I have wanted to know more about, so when I came across the Barnsley Chronicle article from July 1988 I was so excited. Not only did it list the items inside it, it also brought to light some new information - Wombwell High students at the time decided what would be placed inside.

“With the 30th anniversary of our store being such a large milestone I thought what better way to add to the celebrations, than to try and find the people that played such a big part in a piece of our store’s history.

“After the story ran in the Chronicle I was contacted by Lee Chadburn, who was one of the children involved with the time capsule at the time. He advised me that some people were still in touch but for others, he got the message out on social media. He managed to make contact with a number of people who attended back in 1988 and he very kindly coordinated the get together.

“Sadly due to work commitments, we couldn’t get everyone together at the same time. But it was great to see so many people and was brilliant to recreate the photo, in the same spot 30 years later.

“Trevor Pearmain, the teacher that organised the whole thing back in 1988, is sadly no longer with us, his wife contacted us and I was asked her if she would like to attend. I was really pleased she was able to make it.

“Due to England playing we didn’t have much time to celebrate with the full group, but quite a few stayed for a cuppa afterwards and it was non-stop laughter and reminiscing about the good old days.

“I would like to thank them all for coming along to mark our 30th birthday celebration. It was a pleasure to meet them all and hear all their great stories.”
