THE A616 Stocksbridge bypass has closed to allow further drainage work to take place.

The carriageway closed in both directions from 11am today to allow contractors to safely get to the pipework under the road.

A spokesman said: “The pipework was jetted yesterday under lane closures and although it allowed the road to remain open overnight and throughout this morning’s rush hour, further work needs to take place.

“Investigations were carried out yesterday (Tuesday) after the water levels dropped significantly and will continue throughout today.

“Clearly signed diversions will be in place via the M1. Local diversions are also in place.

“It is expected the road will reopen in time for rush hour.”
