A PUPIL at Wath Academy has tested positive for Covid-19.

The academy on Sandygate made the announcement today (Friday September 11) that a year 13 pupil at its sixth form had tested positive.

In a statement to parents, principal Liam Ransome said: “In line with our planned response the academy has sought advice from Public Health England and implemented all necessary measures which includes self-isolation for the affected pupil and those directly affected.

“In the interests of confidentiality I am unable to identify the pupil concerned, however I can reassure you that all pupils directly affected by this have been contacted and all families have been given the appropriate advice as agreed with Public Health England.

“I hope this communication appeases any concerns that understandably as parents you may have.

“We are committed to the health and safety of our students and staff and will continue to review and refine our risk assessment.

“We will continue to communicate effectively and efficiently with parents when cases arise.”

Mr Ransome added the academy’s first full week had been ‘very positive’ with regards safety measures, including 100-minute lessons, staggered start and break times and specified entrances for different year groups.

Six schools in Barnsley - Barugh Green Primary, Athersley South Primary, Wellgate Primary, St Michaels and All Angels Primary, St Helen’s Academy and Outwood Primary Academy Littleworth Grange - have partially closed due to Covid-19 cases.
