FLYTIPPERS might finally be curbed after a gate put up to prevent their access on to a rural stretch is locked.

The tipping hotspot in Great Houghton at the top of Chapel Lane, on a track which runs through to Middlecliff Lane, Little Houghton, has been a magnet for people dumping rubbish such as sofas and mattresses.

And the numbers of complaints about the levels of items being tipped there led to work being carried out to improve the area, with part of the road being resurfaced and a barrier put up to prevent entry onto the stretch where people dumped their rubbish.

However, those doing the work failed to make sure the entry could be locked, which meant dumpers just carried on flytipping without restraint.

But at Wednesday’s meeting of Great Houghton Parish Council, chairman Dorothy Higginbottom said a lock is now being put in place on the gate, with the complicated issue of access being tackled at the same time.

She said: “People have said that it’s not been locked, which has led to more tipping, and it really should have been to stop the tipping.

“The barrier should finally have a lock by tomorrow. I was quite surprised to learn there are five land owners down there. The lock will be a digital, not a key one, with the land owners all having the code.”

A further problem with rogue quad bikers using the track has also been passed onto the police neighbourhood team too.
