ADIE Flute runs the Barnsley Rucksack Project which aims to help the homeless and those sleeping rough, through the harsh winter months.

It is not about grand gestures, but about giving up a little time and the odd old or unused belonging.

People are asked to fill a rucksack with things such as a sleeping bag, a fleece or warm coat, some thick socks and clean, unused underwear, gloves and a woolly hat, non-perishable food and a spoon and empty flask.

The rucksacks are handed out at the Barnsley Churches Drop In Project on John Street, Barnsley, which supports the homeless.

Adie, 44, of Gateway Plaza, said he was surprised to learn he had been shortlisted in the Community Hero category.

He said: “I’m pleased, but I find it hard because I see what other people do - particularly on the homelessness side of things. I think other people do a lot more than me.

“The project wouldn’t be a success without everyone else.

“There are figures which suggest homelessness has risen, and I think that is evident in Barnsley.”
