AFFORDABLE homes are set to be built on the site of the historic Pilley Club after it went into administration and closed.
The club site has now been taken over by Oliver Construction which intends to put up three three-bedroom houses with garages and a two-bedroom detached bungalow.
The club, also known as Wharncliffe and Silkstone Reading Rooms, has a 130-year history but went into administration in November last year and finally shut its doors last month.
It was struggling financially and not even earning enough to cover its lease. Members blamed its decline on the rise of cheap supermarket booze, the smoking ban, dwindling subscription revenue, and the club’s remote location.
