Former Reds midfielder Steve Agnew has many happy cup memories from his time with Barnsley but he's hoping more are made this weekend - for his new club.

The recently-appointed Middlesbrough Assistant Head Coach will return to Oakwell on Saturday where Barnsley face The Riversiders in the third round of the FA Cup.

Agnew, 49, played for Barnsley on more than 200 occasions between 1983 and 1991 after graduating through the academy system.

He will be warning his new team not to take Barnsley lightly after seeing them in pre-season when he was assisting Steve Bruce with former club Hull City.

Agnew told the Chronicle: "Dale Jennings has got good pace, balance and can go past players."Ross Turnbull was at Middlesbrough when I was there and is a good keeper. Leroy Lita was there too and he's a good finisher.

"Obviously relegation from the Championship was not what they wanted but in Danny Wilson they have a manager who is capable of getting them promotion."

Agnew spent the bulk of his playing career at Oakwell before stints with Blackburn, Leicester, Sunderland and York City. He's now considered a top level coach and assists former Real Madrid player Aitor Karanka.

He added: "I have lots of happy memories from my time at Barnsley - particularly in the cup. I can remember beating West Ham away and getting to play Everton in the quarter-final in front of 30,000 people."We also played Liverpool when they had a top, top team.

"We always seemed to have a good cup run at Barnsley. I'm looking forward to coming back."Any team coming to take on a Danny Wilson side are in for a hard game."
