A SCHEME to help young people get into radio broadcasting is off to a good start in Penistone.

The Young Voices project has recruited its first batch of trainees and has already established good links with Penistone Grammar school.

In a tie-up with Penistone FM, the scheme aims to provide work placements for young people wanting to gain experience to enter the broadcasting industry.

Supported by just under £8,000 from Penistone Area Council, the project was launched last October.

Presenting its first report to councillors, council manager Elaine Equeall said: “It’s a good start and an excellent opportunity for young people.”

She said five youngsters were recruited in January and training had already started for presenters and interviewers.

Funding for the project took a while to filter through, said Ms Equeall. “But we started work presuming the money would come and the first cohort of young people was recruited,” she said. “Since then, a number of other youngsters have expressed interest so the project is in fine form.”

Penistone Grammar School sixth form has been flagged up as a great asset to the scheme. Students go to Penistone FM each week for ‘enrichment’.
