A BARNSLEY brass band has appointed a new conductor.

Dr Alex Parker has been appointed musical director of Worsbrough Brass, taking over from John Hopkinson who has left after ten years, having led the band into the second section of competitive brass banding.

The new MD is known in the banding world for his work with Brass for Africa, UniBrass and is currently partnership development officer at Brass Bands England. He will also be continuing his role as MD at Stockport Silver Band.

‘Parky’, as he is known, will be helping the band prepare for 2019’s Yorkshire regional championships with the aim of being promoted into the first section, as well as preparing the band’s usual summer concert programme and working with the band on a few exciting new projects.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Worsbrough,” he said.

“It’s an exciting time for the band as they seek to improve upon a really solid foundation whilst retaining a friendly atmosphere. I’m looking forward to getting out there and performing with such a talented and enthusiastic group.”

The first concert with Parky at the helm was held last night at St Andrew’s Church, Hoyland.

The band currently has vacancies for soprano cornet, cornet, trombone, baritone, and bass. For details contact band secretary Lauren Burns on worsbroughbrass.sec@gmail.com.
