RENT for council housing tenants is set to be dropped by one per cent from April.

Barnsley Council’s ruling cabinet approved its 2018/19 housing revenue account budget and the 2018-2023 capital investment programme for council housing on Wednesday.

It is expected to be approved by the full council on February 5.

The five-year capital investment programme, which totals £138m, aims to keep the council’s housing stock well-maintained and helps to meet the housing needs of residents.

The decision comes a week after the council approved a £4m project to further boost its housing stock, which will see 39 long-term empty properties across the borough being brought back into use.

There are roughly 18,500 council houses in Barnsley. The one per cent decrease in rent will equate to an average saying of 79p per week for every tenant - about £41 per year.
