Goalkeeper Ben Alnwick left Barnsley by mutual consent on Monday after the arrival of Mike Pollitt relegated him to third choice goalkeeper.
The 26-year-old joined the Reds last summer on a two-year deal and made 12 appearances in his first season. But manager David Flitcroft last week admitted that Alnwick wanted to leave after being left out of the matchday squad for the cup game against Southampton as Pollitt played and Luke Steele was dropped to the bench.
Flitcroft said last week: "Ben has been waiting in the wings for his opportunity and I’ve taken it away so I’m not sure that level of trust can be rebuilt."

We have been at the heart of our community, every week, since 1858. The town and its people have changed dramatically since then but the Chronicle has been a constant.
It’s our belief that news should be available to everyone regardless of their circumstance. But we need a little helping hand to do so.
Production Editor, Ashley Ball, said: "In an ever changing media world, it’s important that news is reported correctly and without any hidden agenda.
Your support allows us to keep holding decision-makers to account and report on everything that happens in the town, good or bad, fairly."
