AMBULANCES taking patients to Barnsley Hospital were diverted last Sunday because it was so busy.

A spokesman for Barnsley said the diversions occurred between 4am and 7am because Doncaster Royal Infirmary was not ‘under the same pressures’.

“Barnsley Hospital and Yorkshire Ambulance Services were required to divert ambulances from the Barnsley area to Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

“There were no patients transferred during this time.

“Any calls for time-critical patients requiring immediate attention or paediatric patients were still being brought to Barnsley Hospital during this period.

“As part of an agreed escalation process, hospitals and ambulance services work together to maintain patient safety. In extremely busy circumstances, partners assist the relief of pressure on one unit with the support of another hospital.”
