THE results of a month-long petition calling for traffic calming measures to be brought in at an accident blackspot in Shafton will be revealed tonight.

Long-running calls for more to be done to boost safety on Sandy Bridge Lane saw the village’s parish council launch a petition last month, which has seen paper copies circulated around Shafton in an effort to sway Barnsley Council.

Following a site visit last year, which involved the parish council, North East ward councillors and the local authority’s highways department, it was deemed the road was not dangerous enough - or had enough recorded serious collisions - to warrant action.

Dave North, chairman of Shafton Parish Council, said: “Our monthly meeting takes place on Monday evening and everyone is invited to that.

“One of the main agenda items is to discuss the ongoing petition, collate the results and then agree on the next steps to take.

“It’s essential that measures are brought in on Sandy Bridge Lane and we are determined to keep fighting for our residents who know only too well just how dangerous it is.”

Barnsley Council, which receives funding from the South Yorkshire Local Transport Plan to carry out improvements at locations where there is a history of collisions resulting in personal injury, previously said the lane was not on its hotspot list and ruled out installing better signage and electronic speed indicators.

“It seems the only way the council will act is if there’s a fatality,” Mr North said. “We have been left with no choice but to start this petition and we will keep on with it until we are heard.

“We plan to show just how many people in Shafton disagree with them and we’ll be passing the petition on to Coun Sir Steve Houghton so it’s discussed at a full council meeting.”

Shafton Parish Council’s meeting takes place at Shafton Community Centre from 7pm.
