ANTI-FRACKING campaigners staged a protest outside the Barnsley branch of Barclays Bank encouraging its customers to close their accounts in protest at the bank’s ties with the fracking industry.

Trade unionist Dave Gibson was among the protesters in town on Saturday and said there had been a lot of support for the cause.

“Lots of people were disgusted to learn that their bank was backing fracking, and said they would seriously consider switching to another bank,” said Dave, of Western Street, Barnsley.

“It was an overwhelmingly supportive response from the people we spoke to and leafleted. I don’t think we found anyone who was supportive of Barclays’ position.”
