A PILOT scheme which saw children team up with the police to carry out anti-speeding operations near schools will continue.

Having been started in the spring, multiple schools across Barnsley got involved as children were shown how to use a speed gun to deter drivers.

Children, who have re-turned from their summer break, started the new term this week and police have already scheduled in operations to take place.

A speed indicator display (SID) which displays a smiling face if drivers are within the speed limit and an unhappy face if they are exceeding it will be used alongside officer-operated speed guns, which can result in fines and points.

Sgt Dave Baines said: “We have had good results so we’ve set up schemes at schools where there’s speeding nearby. Kids are very open to what we are trying to achieve and officers give them road safety talks before we head out on the speed operation.

“It gets them involved from a young age and that has to be a good thing. If motorists see us and children out on the roads where speeding is an issue, they will think twice and slow down.”
