ELSECAR and surrounding areas are to be subjected to a series of archaeological digs over the next few years which are expected to reveal much new information about the village’s rich history and which could result in some sites being left open for visitors to see.

Experts will have so much work to do that they will also be trying to recruit villagers - including children from Holy Trinity Academy - to help with some of the work.

The excavations are expected to go on for several years, financed with the backing of Historic England, which recently declared the area one of only ten Heritage Action Zones in the country.

No decisions have yet been taken about where the work will take place, but the site of Elsecar ironworks, within the existing Heritage Centre alongside the boundary to the railway station, appears a likely candidate.
