ARCHAEOLOGISTS will carry out a survey of the Barnsley Pals' training ground this week to determine the layout of the site during World War One.
Elmet Archaeological Services Ltd has received £9,600 in lottery funding to carry out the work at the former Silverwood Newhall Training Camp at Silkstone, now Silverwood Scout Camp on Barnsley Road.
The project, from April 14 to 27, marks the centenary year of the war and the idea is to get Barnsley folk involved with the archaeological, geophysical and landscape surveys of the site.
It is hoped any finds will add to the understanding of the Barnsley Pals' place in the conflict, as well as the local history of Barnsley.
Archaeology manager, Alex Sotheran, said: "We're a community archaeology company and we're interested in getting people involved with their local heritage.
"We are only looking at a particular barracks area in the first instance. What we are hoping to find is an accurate layout of where the barracks were.
"The problem is at some point over the last 100 years a lot of the land was filled in and only about a quarter of the site might be from World War One.
"We'll be doing geophysical and landscape surveys and the geophysical survey should pick up any remains of post holes in the ground which we can use to map out the site of the barracks."
All volunteers for the project will be trained in archaeological surveying techniques under the guidance of professional archaeologists.
