A knitted Mary and Joseph will make their way around Ardsley in the run up to Christmas as part of an old Mexican tradition.

The vicar at Christ Church at Ardsley has organised Las Posadas - a Mexican tradition which saw young people dressed as Mary and Joseph asking for a room - using woolly figures lodging with different members of the congregation.

Rev Fiona Kouble said: "It's an opportunity during Christmas when everyone is busy, to stop and remember what Christmas is all about.

"People will be encouraged to take the figures out with them during the day and take photos, which will be used to build up an image of their journey through the community."

Posada is Spanish for 'accommodation' or 'lodging' and Las Posadas is a tradition where young people dressed as Mary and Joseph travelled from house to house asking for a room for the night and telling people about the imminent arrival of Jesus.

On Christmas Eve, they would visit a local church to re-enact the nativity. Modern day Posadas use nativity figures of Mary and Joseph, giving the host the chance to create their own celebration in their home, and meet other people.

The Knitted Nativity's journey will start on December 1 at the Advent Sunday brunch service at 10.30am and will travel around the parish, before returning to the church on Christmas Eve for the crib service at 4pm.
