AN area of Grimethorpe is becoming unsafe due to rising crime and antisocial behaviour, it has been claimed.

Residents - many whom are elderly - are afraid to go out at night according to people on Stacey Crescent, who blamed Berneslai Homes’ letting policy for allowing ‘yobs’ to move onto the street.

The matter was discussed at last week’s crime and safety group meeting at The Acorn Centre, Grimethorpe, and will be put forward as a potential policing priority at next week’s PACT meeting, which takes place at Cudworth Fire Station on Wednesday at 2pm.

One resident said: “It’s coming from the maisonettes which are rented out by Berneslai Homes and their tenants are causing misery. They’re changing people’s way of lives, ordinary people who have lived here for decades and are wanting to enjoy their retirement.

“I don’t like to point the finger but there’s little else we can do. General antisocial behaviour with them being loud and rowdy happens regularly at night and sheds and cars are being broken into.”
