An incredible debut goal by Adam Armstrong gave Barnsley their first away points of the season with a 2-1 success at Preston North End.

Sam Winnall's first goal of the season put the Reds in front midway through the first half but Aiden McGeady curled in a brilliant equaliser. Substitute Armstrong then ran onto a long ball and produced a wonderful flick to go round a defender before shooting high into the top left corner from the right side of the box.

The Reds are now second in the Championship with four wins from six games since promotion.

Paul Heckingbottom kept the same team that won 4-0 at home to Rotherham United in a local derby before the two-week international break. But there were four new signings on the bench in Adam Jackson, Cole Kpekawa, Sam Morsy and Armstrong.

The Reds had the better of the first half as they looked solid at the back and more creative of the two sides.Barnsley had the first real chance when Winnall's shot from the edge of the box was tipped over by home goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard after Marley Watkins had touched an Andy Yiadom pass perfectly into his strike partner's path.

The hosts then came very close to taking the lead as Paul Gallagher's left-wing free-kick went through the legs of Marc Roberts and was destined for the bottom left corner but Adam Davies brilliantly tipped it onto his post. Roberts then headed over an Adam Hammill cross after one of several clever short corner routines.

The Reds eventually took the lead on 27 minutes when a Barnsley defensive clearance fell to Watkins who was not picked up by the home defence and powered down the left side of the box before firing the ball across goal for a sliding Winnall to turn in from a yard out.

Barnsley almost doubled their lead early in the second half when Hourihane's free-kick was beaten away by Lindegaard. But the hosts then had a good spell with Roberts deflecting a cross just wide of his own goal then Preston captain Tom Clarke almost finding the bottom left corner with a header.

The leveller eventually came on 65 minutes when debutant McGeady fired a spectacular strike into the top left corner from 25 yards. Eoin Doyle headed a Callum Robinson cross off target then McGeady blasted an easier chance wide from inside the box.Preston had dominated for half an hour but were stunned by Armstrong's goal after 79 minutes.

He ran onto a long ball, flicked the ball beautifully past a defender and curled into the top right corner from the left of the box.Clarke forced a save out of Davies and McGeady fired another long-ranger just wide but the Reds held on to get their first away win of the season.
