ARSONISTS destroyed two sheds on an allotment minutes after the granddad who had cared for it for 30 years had locked up for the afternoon.

Ron Clarke's family is calling for better security after the sheds off Acorn Way, Grimethorpe, were set on fire on Monday afternoon.

Ron's grandson, Jordan Clarke, of Lilydene Avenue, Grimethorpe, said his 75-year-old granddad is very upset and shocked by what has happened.

Responsibility for the Grimethorpe allotments has been handed over from Brierley Town Council to the allotment holders themselves.

The land still belongs to the parish and at last week's town council meeting it was agreed to charge the allotment holders an annual peppercorn rent of £1.
