Barnsley-born Matty Askin will finally get the chance to make a first defence of his British cruiserweight title on Saturday night.

Askin, 29, whose granddad was former Wombwell professional and trainer Terry Halpin, fights Scot Stephen Simmons at the York Hall, Bethnal Green on Saturday.

The pair had been due to meet last year but a shoulder injury sustained by Asking delayed the contest until now.

Askin won the belt way back in May last year with a storming victory over Welshman Craig Kennedy in Cardiff.

Kennedy’s ‘0’ was taken in the process as Askin bludgeoned his way to a sixth round knockout win.

Askin said: “I’m very much looking forward to the fight. Simmons is aggressive, he doesn’t hide but I think my style will take care of that.

"I won’t have to go looking for him. I have twice as many knock out wins as he does and only been stopped once in my career. It will make for a great fight no matter how long it lasts.”

The show is being broadcast live on Channel Five.

* A split decision went against Barnsley Star youngster John Smith in the Junior ABAs.

Smith, 15, from Carlton, was on the wrong side of the decision as he exited the competition at the Yorkshire v North West stage against Zain Ammed from Rochdale’s Queensway on a show in Ashton-under-Lyne over the weekend.

Fellow amateur stable Micky’s Athletic, ran by the Wale family including British champion Josh Wale, from Brampton, have a show on Friday (16th). Action at the Empress Ballroom in Mexborough will get underway after 7pm and tickets are available on the door.
