AT THE age of 83 Anne Hart's career as a school crossing warden, meals and after school club assistant is nothing short of remarkable.

But the energetic pensioner has gone further still - being named as one of the top five people in Yorkshire in a '100 Smiles' campaign which spotlights those who make special efforts to make others happy.

Anne started crossing patrol duties at Oxspring primary school eight years ago as a temporary measure but never gave up.

And over time her responsibilities have expanded to other roles within school, where she has become a popular figure with staff, pupils and parents.

The 100 Smiles campaign was intended to highlight the region's personalities who put most effort into making others happy and Anne soared to the top of the list - named as one of five exemplary nominees.

Despite her age, Anne, a former psychiatric nurse, has no plans to give up the job and said: "I love it here, it is a privilege to work at this school.

"The head teacher is forward thinking and the staff are very hard working.

"I am pleased with the award, but I think there are other people in the world who deserve it more than me.

"It was a very humbling experience when I saw what other people who had been nominated did.

"It was very nice of the parents to nominate me."

The awards were organised by Barnsley firm Totally Tipi, with winners coming from a wide range of backgrounds, including volunteers, community groups and foster parents.

An awards evening was held at the Three Acres restaurant in Emley.
