A BARNSLEY Hospital midwife has won an award for the compassionate care she gives while at work.

Fleur Kapka was nominated for the European Kate Granger Awards by her student midwife, Hannah Birks.

The awards were named after an English doctor called Kate Granger worked tirelessly to raise awareness about compassion in healthcare while undergoing treatment for cancer.

Dr Granger launched the awards in 2014 to recognise the people and organisations that have delivered compassionate care across Europe.

“I am overwhelmed to have been nominated and to have won this award,” said 27-year-old Fleur.

“As a midwife I feel it is fundamental we deliver all care for our families with compassion.

“We look after families at the most wonderful and sometimes the most terrible times of their lives.

“It is vital we deliver this care to ensure these families experience the best care possible.

“I was nominated for this award by one of our student midwives, and I am passionate about ensuring we train our future midwives to deliver outstanding passionate care.

“I love being a midwife and working alongside my fantastic colleagues at Barnsley Hospital.”

Nominator Hannah added: “Fleur has put so much into improving the experience of students over the past year.

“I was lucky enough to have Fleur as a mentor throughout my third year and I saw the work she put in place to help students.

“She worked alongside students to ask them how they wanted to see the student experience improved and has placed a student board on the labour ward where students can look for teaching sessions and information about student involvement.”
